Happy New Year 2002!

Travel and Adventures

2001 has been a very eventful year for me.  At the end of last November, I completed revamping and selling my house in Berkeley, put most of my furniture in storage, loaded the dogs in the car, hooked up the U-Haul, and headed for Colorado.  We arrived at Liz's house, and my new address, on Thanksgiving day.  Two weeks later I left for Egypt and my friend Colleen's wedding in the Sinai.  Since it was cheaper to buy a ticket to Rome, and a separate ticket to Egypt, I spent 3 days in Rome, before going on to Egypt.  Rome is an astounding and beautiful city, everywhere ancient ruins are juxtaposed with modern buildings.  Unfortunately, it was November and dreary, but the great coffee shops make up for a lot of dreariness.

Desert Camp

The plane to Cairo was late, causing me to arrive in the late afternoon.  The person who was supposed to be picking me up was not available, because he "had to eat dinner."  Fortunately I did not become irate at this odd development. It turned out that it was Ramadan.  Everyone fasts (no food or water) all day and gets to eat at the official sunset, 5 pm.   I spent the night in Cairo, and the next day I began adjusting to the colorful mix of dirt, noise and chaos that surrounds Cairo and most of Egypt.  I caught a 6:00 am flight to Sharm el Sheikh, where I was met by my friends, Colleen and Jackie.  For 6 weeks, I stayed in Egypt, mostly the Sinai, with a short trip to Jordan.  While in the Sinai, we went on a 4 day camel trek in the desert, celebrated the Bedouin marriage ceremony, also in the desert, climbed to the top of Mount Sinai on Christmas eve to watch the sunrise, and took dozens of pictures of gorgeous scenery and rocks.

In Jordan we went to Wadi Ram where Laurence of Arabia rallied his troops before the final attack on Aqqaba, bought rugs, and visited the site of the Baptism of Jesus and the Dead Sea.

Finally I went to Cairo and spent a delightful few days with David and Darcy Tyler  before flying off, this time to London and on to Glastonbury and Tintangel, where we celebrated Imbolc in the stormy weather and crashing waves of the Cornish coast, beautiful even in winter.  Meditating in the cave under the Island of Arthur's legendary birth while waiting for the tide to rise and flood the cave is a very special experience.
